Get the Seagate FreeAgent Desktop External Hard Drive
After a period of usage, we've all been faced with a lack of adequate storage space in our personal computers despite them coming with larger and more expansive hard drives. With the proliferation of larger and larger files ranging from music files to photos to games to movie files, having an external hard drive is a welcome alternative. The Seagate FreeAgent Desktop series of external hard drives offers users the needed hard drive space capability in a compact size that offers portability and convenience.

The Seagate FreeAgent Desktop Hard Drive comes in three capacities: 250 GB, 320 GB, and 500 GB. Each version comes in an identical case that is very compact and has a very small footprint that according to the Seagate website is "no bigger than a stapler." The units have a USB 2.0 connector and are plug-and-play straight out the box. They are compatible with both PC's and Mac's. PC users should have the Windows XP Home, Professional Edition or Windows 2000 Pro operating systems and Mac users should have Power PC G3, G4, or G5 processor OS X 10.3.9 (or higher) or the Intel Core Duo or Core Solo processor OS X 10.4.6 (or higher). They come formatted for NTFS and can be reformatted for use with Mac by using Disk Utility.

The units are very sleek and have a sophisticated design described as expresso brown with molten amber illumination. The cable ports are mounted in the base and which helps to minimize the space that the unit uses. It is a very quiet drive and will not be a distraction while working at your desk.

In addition to having the extra storage space, the units can be used for backing up the files on your personal computer's hard drive. It is much easier to archive files to the FreeAgent Desktop Hard Drive than burning a series of backup disks on CD's or DVD's. In the event of emergencies, the FreeAgent Desktop Hard Drive can quickly be disconnected and to take with you. Another usage of the external hard drive would be to move large amounts of files from one computer to another. I have found this use of the hard drive to be very handy when there are multiple computers in a home or office that are not networked.

For homes or offices that have a network, the Seagate FreeAgent Desktop Hard Drive could be used as the additional storage device on a network. All users could share the data stored on the drive in a convenient manner. This also makes it handy for sharing date from one network site to that of another by packing it up and taking it with you.

The Seagate FreeAgent Desktop Hard Drive comes with a USB 2.0 cable, an AC power adapter, the Quick start guide, and a 5 year limited warranty. The units have a 7200 RPM spindle speeds and with the USB 2.0 connection, they can achieve transfer rates up to 480 MB/sec. The hard drives are 7.5" tall, 1.6" thin and 6.4" deep. They come with a base that is about 3.2" wide, so they don't take up too much desktop real estate. Each drive weighs 2 lbs and that makes it light enough to take with you when traveling if there is a need to have your files with you. The suggested prices ranging from $99 for the 250 GB to $169.99 for the 500 GB won't bust your budget either.

So, if you are facing the hard drive space crunch, adding one of the Seagate FreeAgent Desktop Hard Drives to your computer setup will be a smart move. You'll find the additional storage space that is available in the three capacity sizes to be the needed solution for dealing with large files, using it as backup, and having the convenience of portability.
